Two-Rifle Battery for Hunting in Africa

Hi folks, we’re recording this video from our lodge in Africa. To start, I’d like to have my beautiful wife do a quick pan around to show you the lodge.

This is where we live for at least a few months a year, sometimes up to six months. What I want to go over in this video is the two-rifle battery for hunting Africa.

1. Johan Outar .577 Double Rifle

This morning, I had the .577 double with me. When I carry it, I just wear a knife, some spare ammo, and keep one extra cartridge in my pocket. If I don’t get it done with two shots, I can open the action and shove one more in real quick—it takes too much time to load two like they show in the movies. Going with one is much faster since you don’t have to line anything up.

This rifle is a Johan Outar .577 double, and it’s just a beautiful gun. I actually prefer it over my Holland Royale in .577—I just like how it carries and feels. To make the length of pull right, I had D. More rubber added since I have real long arms.

When I’m out hiking, I also carry a knife that was a gift from Jeff Hoover, some ivory-handled spare ammo, and a pair of range-finding binoculars (10x36s).

This morning, I almost had to use the rifle on a buffalo. He took exception to the puppies barking at him and got real feisty. He was only about 20 yards away, shaking his head and coming at me. I popped the safety off, raised the rifle, and figured—well, a buffalo hasn’t gotten me yet. But anyway, he decided not to charge.

2. .416 Rigby (Verney-Carron)

The second rifle I use for hunting is a .416 Rigby, a Verney-Carron, which is my plains game rifle. If needed, it can double as a buffalo rifle.

  • Load: 350-grain Barnes Triple-Shocks at 2,625 fps out of this short barrel.

  • Barrel Modification: Originally came with a 26-inch barrel, but I shortened it to 22 inches—if you hunt a lot, you know that getting in and out of vehicles and walking with a 26-inch barrel isn’t ideal.

  • Scope & Mounts: Has quick-detach scope mounts for the German Präl action, so I can take a buffalo or turn right around and shoot a springbuck at 300 yards with the same load—no need to re-zero.

Final Thoughts

These are my two African rifles when I bring a two-rifle battery for hunting Africa.

Thanks for tuning in, and God bless.
